5 Quick Facts about Stan Mikawos
- Mikawos was born in Gdansk, Poland but moved to Winnipeg at a young age. He played his high school football at Gordon Bell before moving on to Mesabi Junior College and then the University of North Dakota. He was a territorial draft choice of the Bombers in 1982.
- Mikawos battled along the line of scrimmage for 15 seasons and 220 games. That total ranks fourth all-time in Bombers history, behind only Bob Cameron (394), Troy Westwood (293) and Chris Walby (249).
- Mikawos was part of three Grey Cup championship teams with the Bombers – 1984, 1988, 1990 – and played in five total, including the losses in the 1992 and 1993 games.
- In the 1984 Grey Cup win, Mikawos scored a touchdown that proved to be decisive. Scooping up a Dieter Brock fumble after a Tyrone Jones sack, he rumbled 22 yards for a score that broke a 17-17 tie and was the catalyst in a blowout 47-17 win.
- Gritty, underrated and one of the toughest players to pull on a Bombers jersey, Mikawos was inducted into the Blue Bomber Hall of Fame in 2000.
