It is with deepest sorrow we announce the passing of Dennis Liebrecht, aged 82 years, onWednesday, December 16, 2020, at St. Boniface Hospital.
He will be forever missed by his wife Gloryia, who he affectionately referred to as Gogo, son Shawn (Colleen), who he affectionately referred to as Shoosh and his cat Bentley.
Dennis was born in Winnipeg on August 14, 1938, the youngest child of father George and mother Louise. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings.
A gifted athlete from an early age. In the 50s, when Winnipeg became the first city in Canada to promote Little League baseball, Dennis instantly became an all star, once striking out 16 batters in a row. He later went on to play hockey for the Winnipeg Rangers Jr. A team (1956-1959). But his love was football. He started playing with his high school team the St. John’s Tigers, then the Winnipeg Rods Junior Football team and subsequently the St. James Rams Senior Football team, before continuing on professionally with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1965-1967), remaining a proud Bomber alumni member. In 2007, Dennis was inducted into The Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame as a backfield coach with the 1968-1969 Canadian Senior Champions St. Vital Bulldogs and again in 2011, as a player with the 1963 Canadian Senior Champions, St. James Rams.
Dennis briefly worked for the Winnipeg Police Force and Hydro, before embarking on a long career in his passion of sales. Working for Videon, Beck’s, Kraft Foods, Barkwell Paper and ultimately starting his own business, D. K. Liebrecht Enterprises, where he worked tirelessly until early 2020.
Dennis was respected by all the people he met, always generous and caring to others. Dennis never wavered in his faith and always looked to the bright side of every situation. He will be deeply missed and will always be remembered by his family and friends.
Thank you to Pastor Jeff Romas of Springs Church, for all his support and conducting a private family service, held on Wednesday, December 23, 2020.
Thank you to the nurses at St. Boniface Hospital for their compassion and care.
We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes
and try to understand. To yesterday’s
relationship and tomorrow’s reunion.
Given Dennis’ love for animals and his efforts to save them, in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to an animal charity of your choice.
