The University of Washington announced on December 8th, that former halfback George Fleming passed away at the age of 83. Fleming was a multi-position college football player for the Washington Huskies. Fleming was a member of AAWU champion 1959 and 1960 Washington Huskies football teams, playing in the 1960 and 1961 Rose Bowls. He earned second-team All-Coast halfback and Co-Player of the Game honors after the Huskies’ win in the 1960 Rose Bowl. In the 1961 AFL Draft he was selected in the 2nd round by the Oakland Raiders. After failing to make the Raiders in 1962 he took his football talents to Canada, where he played two seasons for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1963 and 1964. After retiring from football, he then decided to get into politics, and in 1968, Fleming entered a career in Washington state politics, including two years in the state House of Representatives and 20 years in the Senate. He retired after the 1990 session.
For his contribution to the Rose Bowl game, he was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame on December 31, 2011.
