Lawrence James, Sr.
Age72, Son of the late Lawrence James, Sr.& Irene Cooper and a retired Detention Sergeant with the Alachua County Jail, unexpectedly surrendered to the will of God on Thursday, April 8, 2021, following a brief stay at Shands UF.
A 1966 Graduate of Lincoln High School, where he was once known as the “most athletic”, Lawrence, referred to as “Hoss”, was highly acclaimed as a notorious Fullback with the competitive Lincoln High School Fighting Terriers Football Team. His athletic scholarship led him to Norfolk State University (of Norfolk, Virginia). He was then drafted to the NFL Denver Broncos. He continued his football career with the Canadian Football League.
Lawrence was a Member of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church where he sang with the Male Choir.
The Homegoing Celebration will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, April 17, 2021, at Pine Grove Cemetery (Gainesville, FL) with Reverend Ronald Foxx delivering Words of Comfort. Mr. James will be viewed at the Funeral Home on Friday, April 16, 2021, from 2:00-7:00PM – And at the cemetery on Saturday with the Processional. The Procession will form at the residence of his Daughter – Kayla James, 3304 NE 12th Street, Gainesville, FL, at 10:15AM.
Left to cherish his memory are his Children – Ta’Kydra Robinson, Michael James, Kezia James, Shelaine James, Kayla James and La’Tasha Goode; A bonus Son – Classitt McCray; 7 Grandchildren; Siblings – Shirley Ellis, Barbara James, Jacqueline James (Larry James – Deceased); Companion – Mae Edith Williams; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins & friends.

Lawrence James a former running back in the Canadian Football League passed away at the age of 72. James was awarded an athletic scholarship which led him to Norfolk State University. At the conclusion of his college career he was drafted by the NFL Denver Broncos. He continued his football career with the Canadian Football League. He played for the BC Lions during the 1971 season. Condolences to his family and friends and may he Rest in Peace.
