CFL Alumnus Leonard Skinner Passes

SKINNER, Leonard “Len” “Skins”

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of a great husband, father and grandfather on April 6, 2020. Cherished husband and best friend of his high school sweetheart Jeanette “Jan”. ‘World’s Best Dad’ to Sherri and Chad Radu, and Jennifer and Chad Nadeau. Proud grandpa to DJ Cassady and Melissa Taveirne, Addison and Rhys. Loving brother to Robert (Peggy), the late Richard (late Kay), Arlene, and Larry (Linda). Dear brother-in-law to Helen and Hugh Wilband. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends. He was an outstanding football player and track and field athlete at Patterson Collegiate and a star linebacker for the AKO Fratmen. Len received many medals and awards, including B’Nai B’rith (Outstanding Athletic Award). Len’s “Skins” success as a teenager earned him a tryout with the Ottawa Rough Riders. 122 players attended the team’s rookie camp, but only Len and 2 others were selected. He became a professional football player at the age of 18. After one season in Ottawa, Len “Skins” was traded to the Calgary Stampeders, where he immediately became the team’s starting middle linebacker. He also saw action as an offensive guard and on all special teams. After retiring from football, Len “Skins” became a Windsor Police Officer and retired after protecting and serving the community for 32 years. He owned race horses for 20 years and was a familiar face at Windsor Raceway. Len “Skins” was inducted into the Windsor/Essex County Sports Hall of Fame in 2011. He gave a great deal of time giving back to the community and helped raise funds for local organization. He will remain in the hearts of his family and friends. A special thank you to Dr. Paul Hanson and all the doctors, nurses and staff at Windsor Regional Hospital Ouellette Campus and Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare for their exceptional care. Arrangements entrusted to Victoria Greenlawn Funeral Home
