November 5, 1930 – November 9, 2020
NOVIS, Rupert (BERT) – Passed away peacefully and suddenly on November 9th, in Scarborough, just 4 days after his 90th birthday. Pre-Deceased by his wife Anne of 37 years and his Brother Gilbert, Bert is survived by his family which includes his Son’s; David & Gary (Christine), Daughter Kristy (Andy), Grandchildren; Daniel, Ashley, Kaitlyn, Alyssa, Milan & Athina, Mother-In Law; Shirley, Sister-In-Laws; Bernice & Cori, Brother-In-Laws Rick (Jill) & David, he is also survived by his Nieces and Nephews; Doug, Linda (Steve) Kayleigh (Jim) as well as Great Nieces and Nephews.
We lost a great one, and can all agree that Bert lived a long and full life. He had many experiences, memories and stories which include a pretty tough upbringing, and was able to turn that around and accomplish so many things that include working for Toronto Hydro in his early days, being a Professional Wrestler as The Red Hood, a Professional Football Player for the Toronto Argonauts & The Calgary Stampeders & also his 32 1/2 year career with The Metro Toronto Police where he retired in 1992 as a Detective Sergeant with The Intelligence Bureau and previously with the Hold Up Squad. Once Bert retired, he still did some security and surveillance work to pass his time.
Back is his prime, Bert was definitely a force to be reckoned with, and many people have been sharing their memories with us, which is overwhelming to see the impact that this man has had on so many people, but to his family and many close friends, we only ever saw the Generous and Giant teddy bear side of him and will remember his terrible jokes.
Bert loved his family, his friends, his animals, his sunshine and his cottage & his cigar. He couldn’t fish to save his life, but he sure did try. Due to his giant like stature, Bert was also known for being a bit of a klutz, and no matter the minor injury he endured, you can almost certainly guarantee that his cigar always remained in his mouth, his nose was as big as his heart and apparently is was broken 11 times.
Bert will forever be missed and remembered as a larger than life man. May he Rest In Eternal Peace.
A celebration of Bert’s life will take place at a date to be determined.Published on November 21, 2020
