The Calgary Stampeders announced yesterday that former receiver Herm Harrison has passed away at the age of 71.
“Herm was a great football player but even more importantly he was a great father and husband and community leader,” said Leo Ezerins, Executive Director of the CFL Alumni Association. “He was instrumental in helping put the CFL on the map both on and off the field.”
Harrison was one of the premiere tight ends of his era and played for the Stampeders from 1964-72. He was a Western all-star on six occasions and three times was named a CFL all-star. He finished his career with 443 receptions for 6,693 yards and 43 touchdowns. His number 76 was retired by the Stampeders and he was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 1993.
Harrison was a founding member of the CFL and Calgary Stampeders Alumni Associations.
He was a long time resident of Calgary but always maintained roots in Phoenix.
Harrison was the consummate team player, friend, community leader and father of his daughter Tamara and her husband Junior Thurman, a former Stampeder.
Long time friend JT Hay may have said it best: “Herm never left anything on the table,” said Hay.
