The B.C. Lions announced on Monday that former offensive lineman Jon Hameister-Ries has passed away at the age of 37.
The native of Edmonton was a second-round pick in the 2007 CFL Draft out of the University of Tulsa. He signed with B.C. following a brief stint with the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL and spent seven seasons with the team, winning a Grey Cup in 2011.
The six-foot-six, 285-pound blocker pursued a career as a restauranteur and financial planner following his retirement. He competed on season two of MasterChef Canada before opening his restaurant Meat City in Vancouver in 2015.
