Saskatchewan Roughriders Canadian linebacker Sam Hurl has announced his retirement, according to 620 CKRM’s Michael Ball.
Hurl played five of his eight CFL seasons with the Riders, the other three he was a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
“It has become that time, I am going to hang them up, I’m announcing my retirement. I landed a job with Cushman and Wakefield doing commercial real estate back in mid-March,” Hurl said on the Growing The Game podcast.
“Going through the off-season leading up to that point, I came to the conclusion in my mind that if I was able to land a job somewhere within a reasonable timeframe that I would hang up my cleats and start working on something else for my future.”
Cushman and Wakefield is a global commercial real estate services firm. The company’s headquarters is located in Chicago, Illinois and there is an office in Calgary where Hurl was born and raised. It’s among the world’s largest commercial real estate services firms, with revenues of $8.8 billion USD in 2019.
“I’ve had this job for a couple months and I’ve settled in a little bit. I can say to myself more comfortably that I’m going to retire. At first you think, ‘what if I get fired in two weeks? I still might need a job,’” Hurl said.
“It’s a great opportunity for me to get into the real world. It’s just time and I’m really excited and looking forward to my future. I’m content to close the door. I’m quite happy to fully retire and not play the game anymore. I’m looking at it as a new challenge.”
Over his eight CFL seasons, the six-foot-one, 231-pound Hurl played 117 games making 206 tackles, 60 special teams tackles, eight sacks, three interceptions and forced three fumbles. The 30-year-old Hurl was selected by Saskatchewan in the second round, 12th overall during the 2012 CFL draft.
“When you’re playing in the CFL you’re not playing for money, you’re playing because you want to be on the field and you want to make an impact,” Hurl said.
Hurl won the 2013 Grey Cup with Saskatchewan as a key special teamer and started over 50 games in the CFL.
