Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive end Chad Geter has retired from football to join the United States Air Force.

Geter said Monday that he made the decision to enlist after talking it over with his family, agent, Riders head coach Craig Dickenson and vice-president of football operations and general manager Jeremy O’Day.

“I put in my application and not everyone gets accepted,” Geter said Monday from his home in Charleston, W. Va. “It came back positive so I decided to go with it.”

Geter hasn’t played a CFL game since the Riders were beaten 20-13 by the visiting Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the CFL’s West Division final on Nov. 17, 2019. The 2020 CFL season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the long break contributed to his decision to retire from football.

“It played a big part in it because we missed all of last season,” said the 26-year-old Geter. “Then we postponed the season this year. When the season first got postponed this year I thought that I couldn’t keep hanging around because I need more stability in my life and the Air Force provides that.”

Geter signed with the Riders in 2018, dressing for 18 regular-season games. He recorded 19 defensive tackles, 17 special-teams tackles, three sacks and three tackles for a loss during the 2018 season.

He dressed for two games with the Montreal Alouettes in 2019 before returning to the Riders for six games. He had nine defensive tackles, three sacks and two special-teams tackles with the Green and White in 2019.

The Green and White also announced the retirement of national offensive lineman Braden Schram, who dressed for 10 regular-season games in 2019.

The signing of receiver Terrell Jana, Saskatchewan’s second-round selection (17th overall) in the 2021 CFL draft, was announced Monday. The Vancouver native dressed for 49 games with the University of Virginia Cavaliers, recording 123 receptions for 1,481 yards and five touchdowns.

The signings of American receiver Ricardo Louis and Global kicker Henry Nell were also announced by the Riders.

Louis, 27, joins the Riders after being selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fourth round (114th overall) of the 2016 NFL draft. He spent three seasons with the Browns, dressing for 32 games while recording 45 receptions for 562 yards. He spent the 2020 pre-season with the Miami Dolphins before being released.\

Nell was a third-round selection (23rd overall) in the 2020 Global draft by the Riders. Nell, a converted rugby player from South Africa, played in the National Arena League with the Maine Mammoth and later in the Arena Football League with the Baltimore Brigade and Cedar Rapid Kings as a punter and kicker.

Saskatchewan also announced the releases of Global offensive lineman Rene Brassea, Global receiver Max Zimmermann, national defensive lineman Mathieu Breton and national linebacker Blair Smith.
