Local football star and ex-CFL player Alex Carroll expands his coaching career as the Westshore Rebels receiver coach for the 2019 season.

“I am excited to be joining the Rebels’ highly experienced coaching staff and talented team. I still want to continue to be involved in football and coaching is the perfect way to give back to the community and enjoy the sport I love,” he said in a statement.

Carroll returned home to Victoria last year and turned to coaching youth football as head coach for the Victoria Renegades and Gordon Head Raiders Junior Bantam teams.

His football career started with the Gordon Head Raiders at the age of seven, eventually moving on to the Victoria Renegades and Mt. Doug Secondary School. Carroll was part of a team that won the AA Provincial Championship at Mt. Doug and was a provincial all-star.

Carroll chose to accept a scholarship from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Political Science and was a sprinter on the track and field team. He capped his time with the football program as the leader in all of Ontario University football in receptions, yards, and touchdowns for the 2014 season.

Carroll was signed by the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League in the spring of 2015, where he began his professional career. In the spring of 2017, Carroll was signed by the Montreal Alouettes but suffered a season-ending knee injury in the preseason.

“Having another ex-CFL player on our coaching staff is exciting for our players and prospects. We have been looking for a receiver coach to round off our coaching staff and we are extremely lucky to have Alex join us. Our coaching staff has been finalized so we can now focus on recruiting talented players for the upcoming season,” said Westshore Rebels head coach Shane Beatty.

The Langford-based Rebels play in the six-team BC Football Conference of the Canadian Junior Football League. The club has operated continuously since the late 1960s in Victoria, having previously been known as the Sharks, Payless, and the Hornets.
